Kwikstage Scaffold Return Transoms
The kwikstage return transom is a scaffold part of the British standard kwikstage system scaffolding. It is made of a special omega-shaped steel profile, with two end thumbs and wedge keys fixed at two ends. The return transoms form 90-degree return bays in the Kwickstage construction.
The wedge keys and thumbs fixed the return transoms to the V clips of the kwikstage standards. At the same time, the omega profiles receive scaffold timer planks or steel battens during construction.
The standard sizes of the kwikstage scaffolding return transoms are 2’8″ and 4’2″.

Kwikstage Return Transoms
Kwikstage return transoms are special parts of the BS1139 British standard kwikstage scaffolding system. They are made of special omega profiles specially used to form 90-degree return bays from the main kwikstage frames in construction.
Functions of Kwikstage Return Transoms
- Create a 90-degree corner to a main scaffold
- Change Direction and Create Return Bays of the Kwikstage Scaffold
- Eliminate gaps between runs at a right angle
- Give width to form a rigid bay with the ledger
- Form an upside-down T section that the batten and stage are located in
How to Erect The Return Transoms
- If starting from an external corner of a building, position a Kwikstage Standard, equipped with its Jack, alongside the inner pair of Ledgers in the already erected tower. This will form the inside Standard on the scaffold return
- Make sure that this Kwikstage Standard is at the correct distance from the building face, then adjust the Jack so that the higher ‘V’ pressings on the Standard just touch the underside of the Ledgers in the tower.
- With one person holding this Standard in position, the second operator hooks a Return Transom of the required length over the bottom Ledger in the tower, and connects it to the bottom ‘V’ pressing in the Standard.
- A second Standard (with Jack) is then connected to this Return Transom to form the outside Standard on the scaffold return. Another Return Transom is then fixed at the level of the upper Ledger in the tower.
- Further Ledgers, Standards and Transoms can then be fixed in the same manner as for the first tower and all the wedges driven home.
- Successive bays of the appropriate size can then be erected in the same manner, remembering, where possible, to work continuously in one direction.
- To erect a second lift, first place an appropriate number of battens or Steelstage in position, sitting on the horizontal part of each pair of upper Transoms. This will form part of the safe platform from which to work.
- Using a ladder to gain access to this platform, add Standards, Ledgers, Transoms and Return Transoms in the same manner as previously described, but without the need for levelling
Kwikstage Return Transoms VS Kwikstage Transoms
Both kwikstage return transoms and kwikstage transoms are horizontal parts of the British standard kwikstage system. They have the same function: receiving scaffold boards/battens and forming work platforms for the kwikstage scaffold construction.
